June Adult Sewing Workshops

It’s sun-dress season, and we know you’re burning to learn how to make your own creations. That’s why we’ve added the new Sip ‘n Sew Series, in which we will teach specific garment construction techniques (zippers, darts, collars, etc.) and provide guidance for any sewing project of your choice, along with some tasty adult beverages. It’s not called Sip ‘n Sew for nothing! Perfect timing to have a new dress ready for a Fourth of July party. Sign up now and bring your favorite dress pattern and fabric. See June calendar for all upcoming Adult Sewing Workshops.

Beads of Courage

Sewing brings us much joy, and through the Striving for More Than a Cure organization, our students will soon share this joy with others in our latest community service project. We will provide special drawstring bags to Striving for More to support the Beads of Courage program, in which children collect beads to represent specific cancer treatment procedures at Duke and UNC children’s hospitals.

As children use the bags to collect Beads of Courage throughout treatment, they can “visually show and tell family and friends of their experiences of courage, encouraging them to open up and share their feelings about their condition and the treatment they are receiving,” as described on the Striving for More website.

Girls from our Voyager Academy Enrichment group have begun work on the bead bags to support this wonderful organization and program.

Durham Art Walk

What’s the best part about Spring? All of the colorful fabrics! Our shelves are fully stocked with cheery choices for the students in our Adult Sewing Workshops and Girls Programs. The warm weather has inspired all of us to sew new skirts, dresses, and tote bags. Visit us during the Durham Art Walk Spring Market (April 28 & 29) when we’ll have tote bags available for purchase!

Registration is still open for the After School Program, which runs from the week of April 17 thru the week of May 22. It is the final session before our Crafty Summer Day Camp. Email Jenn to sign up now!

We SeamHappy!

Tessa and I are proud to present our SeamHappy video submission for The Smoffice.

What’s The Smoffice, you ask? It’s a contest for the world’s smallest office, of course! One lucky start-up will enjoy prime window real estate at Beyu Caffe for 6 months, and we hope it will be us!

Unique Project: Kentucky Quilt

Special report from one of our talented Durham Academy students, Kathryn, during our Spring Break Crafty Days camp.

Our assignment was to do a project on a state, and my teacher gave me the state of Kentucky. I first visited Kentucky when I was four years old. My dad grew up in Kentucky, and I have an uncle there who owns a horse farm. I was glad to have this state to learn more about where my family came from. I wanted to make something different from a diorama. I like to sew, so I thought, why not do a quilt!
