Beads of Courage

Sewing brings us much joy, and through the Striving for More Than a Cure¬†organization, our students will soon share this joy with others in our latest community service project. We will provide special drawstring bags to Striving for More to support the Beads of Courage program, in which children collect beads to represent specific cancer treatment procedures at Duke and UNC children’s hospitals.

As children use the bags to collect Beads of Courage throughout treatment, they can “visually show and tell family and friends of their experiences of courage, encouraging them to open up and share their feelings about their condition and the treatment they are receiving,” as described on the Striving for More website.

Girls from our Voyager Academy Enrichment group have begun work on the bead bags to support this wonderful organization and program.

Voyager Academy Enrichment

Not too long ago, the idea of participating in Voyager Academy’s Monday Enrichment Program was just a twinkle in our eyes. Today, we welcomed a fantastic group of Voyager girls to our studio for the first session of the six-week long enrichment class.

Voyager Academy, Monday Enrichment

Toni and I had a great meeting today at Voyager Academy with Jodi Stone, music teacher and Monday Enrichment coordinator extraordinaire. Voyager’s early dismissal on Monday afternoons provides an impressive opportunity for students to explore educational, artistic, and athletic activities. Sew Crafty will be a new addition to the enrichment offerings beginning in November. We will coordinate a professional transportation service, and your kids will feel like stars as they are chauffeured to our studio. Look for us in Voyager’s next enrichment catalog!

We got several oohs and ahhs as we walked through the school with samples of woven pillows and handmade purses in arms. Toni proudly sported an apron skirt, newly sewn by a student in the Deluxe After School Program.
